The 16th century was marked by an impressive «wave» of foundations and reconstructions/restorations of Christian monasteries in the Ottoman Empire. In this paper we examine some regions of the Empire where this most significant phenomenon acquired remarkable dimensions and we compare them with Constantinople and its hinterland, where the relevant activity seems to be limited. Finally we attempt to trace down the reasons which caused the difference between the aforementioned cases.
