This paper presents an overview of the collections of Ottoman documents preserved in monastic archives across Greece, including Mount Athos, Meteora, Thessaly and Mount Olympus, Thrace, the Peloponnese, Salamis, Andros, Patmos, Lesbos, Samos, and Crete. It draws on my joint work with Phokion Kotzageorgis for the Handbook of Ottoman Manuscript Cultures (forthcoming in Brill’s Handbook of Oriental Studies series). As a case study, I focus on my recent joint edition (together with monk Kosmas Simonopetritis) of the Simonopetra Monastery Ottoman Archive, vol. I: The Documents of the Sixteenth Century (Athens, Institute of Historical Research, National Hellenic Research Foundation, Byzantine Research Library 15 / Athonika Symmeikta 14, 2026 [to be printed in September 2026]), examining how the monks preserved these Ottoman documents as precious protective charters safeguarding the monastery’s rights and privileges against an Ottoman administration based on the Islamic Law.
